This is the first production electric vehicle from a major automaker with advanced (non-lead-acid) batteries. It was available for lease only in several parts of the country. As of 26 April 1999 it was taken out of production, in order to allow its manufacturer to concentrate on hybrid-electric vehicles, starting with the 2000 model-year Insight (first shown at the Anaheim Auto Show in October 1999); lessons learned from the 300 or so EV Plus cars made and leased are being incorporated into these newer vehicles.
